1.5 Introducing SmartSVN

1.5.1 SmartSVN Installation Guide - Windows

Here's a quick guide to getting smartSVN installed on Windows. (See our guides to installing on Linus or Apple Mac.)

• 1. Go to smartSVN.com and enter your details into the form, then click on the download link to get the SmartSVN 7 Windows installer.


• 2. Extract the installer zip archive file to a location on your local drive.


• 3. Double-click on the installer program "setup-7_0_6-jre.exe".

• 4. The installer will start. Click "Next".

• 5. On the Custom Setup screen, unless you have a need to reduce the installation footprint, go with the default setup, click "Next".

• 6. You'll now see a "Ready to install SmartSVN 7" screen. Click the "Install" button.

• 7. On the "Completed the SmartSVN 7 Setup Wizard" screen, click "Finish".

• 8. SmartSVN is now installed. To get SmartSVN setup, move onto the next section.
  

1.5.2 Getting Setup and checked out

Now SmartSVN is installed it's time to enter your Subversion repository settings so that you can do a check out. Note that if you already have a working copy on your computer you can add this instead of doing a new checkout.

• 1. This tutorial assumes that you're starting from scratch. Begin by double-clicking the SmartSVN icon.

• 2. The smartSVN splash screen will appear.

• 3. The End User License Agreement will then appear. To progress you need to click on "Next" after ticking the check box to confirm that you understand and agree with the terms and conditions.

• 4. The Program Edition screen will appear. Select the edition that you wish to install.
  
  You can complete your registration to get SmartSVN Professional - in this case, select "Registered Professional or Enterprise edition" once you've got your license key.
  Othewise, you can contain installation using WANdisco's 31-day free trial for the Professional edition.
  
  After 31 days with the trial edition, you'll need to complete the registration otherwise your installation will gracefully downgrade to the SmartSVN Foundation edition.

• 5. SmartSVN now gives you the option to set up with an existing repository, or set one up from scratch. In this example we'll assume that you're already running with Subversion. Select "My repositories are already set up".

• 6. You can import existing repository profiles (these contain all settings which are required to establish a connection and authenticate to a repository). If available, click "Import".

• 7. In this example we're starting clean, with no existing projects. Select "Check out project from repository". Click "OK".
  



• 8. Select "Detailed Checkout" By default, Apache Subversion is available, you'll need to click "Manage" in order to input your own repository details.

• 9. The Repository Profiles screen will open. Click "Add".

• 10. On the Location screen you can either enter your repository URL using the "Enter SVN URL..." screen, or fill the form out as follows:

  Protocol: Select which protocol your organization uses for Subversion repository access:
  HTTP (regular web access)
  HTTPS (SSL encryption over the web)
  SVN (Subversion's custom protocol)
  SVN + SSH (Subversion (Subversion's custom protocol)
  
  Server Name: a name for the server we'll use as a label, this can be anything.
  Repository Path: the path to the repository - don't include the protocol as this is applied automatically according to your earlier selection.
  Server Port: Default for port 80 (the regular web port) or Non-Default if the repository is hosted using a custom port - enter the port number in the box.
  Click "Next".



• 11. On the Details screen, select between "Anonymous" if the repository doesn't required authentication to access or "User Name and Password" if you need to provide SmartSVN with your login details. In which case enter a "User Name" and "Password". You can tick the check box to save your password, so that you won't be prompted for it each time you access the repository.

  You can immediately verify that your details are correct by ticking the "Verify connection when pressing 'Next' check box. Click "Next".



• 12. On the name screen you can assign a name by which your repository profile can be known. By default, the URL is used as to label the profile - you can choose a more meaningful name by selecting "User following profile name:" then entering a name, or as in this example, stick with using the repository URL as the profile name - select "Use SVN-Location as profile name".

• 13. You will be returned to the Repository Profile screen. Your repository will now show up.

• 14. Set a master password for the encrypted password store. This option allows you to secure your local password file. You can also view all the Subversion account passwords that are stored within SmartSVN by clicking on the "Show Passwords" button on the Repository Profiles screen.

• 15. Next we'll select the directory that we want to check out. We could drill down into the repository and limit our check out to a subdirectory, but in this case we'll check out the whole repository.

• 16. A warning will display, asking you to confirm that we want to check out the whole repository. Repositories can be very large, and usually you only work on a small part at a time. In this example we click "Check Out".

  When working with trunk, tags and branches it's not recommended to check out the whole project, because due to the increasing number of tags the working copy (not the repository) would be growing quickly, over time accumulating a lot of unneeded files on your disk. Instead you should check out only trunk or a certain tag or branch and if necessary switch to another location.

  
  
• 17. We need to locate a local directory in which to store our working copy. We create a new "projects" directory and then click "Select".

• 18. On the Local Directory screen we confirm the location in which we will download our working copy.

  In the Check Out section we can choose to check out into the chosen directory, or into a new subdirectory, or replaced relative to the root (as a sibling to the current directory)


• 19. You can check out repository code under a project heading, which makes it easier to manage multiple working copies for different things.
  In this example we're creating a new 'projects' category. Click "Next" to continue.

• 20. The Summary screen confirms the key settings that we're going to apply. Click "Finish" to complete the process.
